Julie Auzillon

Bookbinding

Born in the Paris region in 1982, Julie Auzillon represents a new generation ofartisans who skillfully blend tradition with innovation. After graduating from theprestigious École Estienne in 2003, she worked with artists and luxury brandsbefore establishing her own studio in Paris in 2013. Today, Auzillon takes oncommissions from institutions, bookstores, and bibliophiles, who trust her with thecreative freedom to elevate their treasured books.

In her workshop, which functions as a bookbinding laboratory, technicalchallenges spark intense creativity. Auzillon's work is defined by continuousresearch and the development of innovative binding techniques suited to each book. A century after the creation of metal-hinged bindings (Jotau process, 1920), she spent a year perfecting her own "titanium rod binder," a hinge design thatallows books to open flawlessly. By revealing this structural element, shetransforms it into a graphic feature that becomes integral to the book's design.

Her approach to bookbinding emphasizes aesthetic purity. Using aniline-treatedcalf leather as her canvas, Auzillon paints directly onto the surface, using colorand ink to evoke the inner experience of reading. Her minimalist style is heavilyinfluenced by Japanese aesthetics, where precision and simplicity blend in perfect harmony.
